Microsoft SQL 2025 Enterprise 2-Core Key
- Key delivered by email right after payment
- Download link and activation guide included
- Secure checkout · digital product, nothing shipped
SQL Server 2025 Enterprise is Microsoft's top database edition for mission-critical workloads, licensed per core. This listing is a 2-core licence, the pack size Microsoft sells core licences in. Every processor or virtual machine needs at least 4 core licences, so most buyers order two or more. You get the key by email after payment, with a download link and activation instructions.
- Licenses 2 cores of SQL Server 2025 Enterprise under the Per Core model
- Combine licences: at least 4 core licences per physical processor or per virtual machine
- No CALs needed: unlimited users and devices can connect
- Full Enterprise feature set, with no edition limit on cores or memory
- Digital delivery: nothing is shipped
How many 2-core licences do I need for SQL Server 2025 Enterprise?
Count the cores you need to license, then divide by two: each of these licences covers 2 cores. Microsoft's licensing terms require at least 4 core licences per physical processor, or per virtual machine when you license VMs individually. The smallest possible purchase is therefore two of these licences.
| Setup | Core licences needed | Number of 2-core licences |
|---|---|---|
| Physical server, 1 processor with 4 cores | 4 | 2 |
| Physical server, 1 processor with 8 cores | 8 | 4 |
| Physical server, 2 processors with 6 cores each | 12 | 6 |
| Virtual machine with 2 virtual cores | 4 (minimum) | 2 |
| Virtual machine with 6 virtual cores | 6 | 3 |
With Enterprise, licensing every physical core of a host and adding Software Assurance lets you run unlimited virtual machines on it. Software Assurance is a separate Microsoft agreement, so without it, license each VM on its own.
Do I need SQL Server 2025 Enterprise, or is Standard enough?
You need Enterprise when a database outgrows Standard's limits or needs full high availability. SQL Server 2025 Standard stops at 32 cores and 256 GB of buffer pool memory per instance, and offers only basic availability groups. Enterprise removes those caps and adds online index maintenance and advanced performance features.
| Standard | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing models | Per Core, or Server + CAL | Per Core (new purchases) |
| Max compute per instance | Lesser of 4 sockets or 32 cores | Operating system maximum |
| Max buffer pool memory per instance | 256 GB | Operating system maximum |
| Always On availability groups | Basic only (2 replicas, 1 database) | Full, up to 8 secondary replicas |
| Failover cluster instance nodes | 2 | Up to 16 |
| Online index create and rebuild | No | Yes |
| Transparent data encryption (TDE) | Yes | Yes |
| Resource Governor | Yes | Yes |
A common mistake we see is buying Enterprise for a small line-of-business database that never comes near Standard's limits. Check the full feature list on Microsoft's SQL Server 2025 editions page before you decide.
What's new in SQL Server 2025?
SQL Server 2025 brings AI features into the database engine: a native vector data type with vector search functions, a native JSON data type and regular expression functions in T-SQL. Optimized locking reduces blocking between transactions, and backups can use the newer ZSTD compression.
For Standard edition buyers, the biggest change is capacity. Standard now supports up to 32 cores and 256 GB of buffer pool memory per instance, up from 24 cores and 128 GB, and it now includes Resource Governor. On-premises reporting moves to Power BI Report Server.
What are the system requirements for SQL Server 2025?
SQL Server 2025 needs a 64-bit (x64) processor of at least 1.4 GHz, 1 GB of RAM and 6 GB of free disk space. These are bare minimums: Microsoft recommends at least 4 GB of RAM, and production databases usually need far more. Enterprise runs only on Windows Server, not on Windows 10 or 11.
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | x64, 1.4 GHz minimum; 2.0 GHz or faster recommended |
| Memory (RAM) | 1 GB minimum; 4 GB or more recommended |
| Disk space | 6 GB of free space minimum |
| Operating system | Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025; not supported on Windows 10 or 11 |
| .NET Framework | 4.7.2 |

How do I install and activate SQL Server 2025 Enterprise?
Download SQL Server 2025 from the link in your order email and enter the product key during Setup. The key decides which edition is installed. SQL Server has no separate online activation like Windows, so once Setup finishes with your key, the Enterprise edition is ready to use.
- Run
setup.exeas an administrator and open Installation → New SQL Server stand-alone installation. - On the Product Key page, choose to enter a product key and type the key from your order email.
- Accept the licence terms and select the features you need. Most servers only need Database Engine Services.
- Choose a default or named instance, set the service accounts and authentication mode, and finish the wizard.
- Already running Evaluation or Express? Open Maintenance → Edition Upgrade in the Installation Center and enter your key instead of reinstalling.
A common mistake we see is clicking through the Product Key page with the free Evaluation edition selected. Evaluation stops working after 180 days. If that has happened, run Edition Upgrade with your key; your databases stay where they are.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need CALs with a per-core SQL Server licence?
No. Under the Per Core model, unlimited users and devices can access SQL Server without client access licences. CALs are only needed when a server is licensed under the Server + CAL model, which is available for Standard edition only.
Do I license physical cores or threads?
Physical cores. On a physical server, hyper-threading doesn't change the count: a processor with 8 cores and 16 threads needs 8 core licences. On a virtual machine licensed on its own, you count the virtual cores assigned to it, with a minimum of 4.
Is SQL Server 2025 still supported?
Yes. SQL Server 2025 is in mainstream support until January 2031, so it still gets fixes and improvements. Extended support with security updates then continues until January 2036, under Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy.
Is there a free SQL Server edition for development or testing?
Yes. The free Developer edition (in SQL Server 2025, Standard Developer and Enterprise Developer) has the full feature set but may only be used for development and testing. SQL Server Express is free for small production databases, with tight limits on size and memory.
