- Secure checkout · digital product, nothing shipped
SQL Server 2022 Standard is Microsoft's mainstream database edition for business applications, licensed here per core. This listing licenses 16 cores, enough for a server with up to 16 physical cores, and no CALs are needed for users or devices. You get the key by email after payment, with a download link and activation instructions.
- Licenses 16 cores of SQL Server 2022 Standard under the Per Core model
- Covers one 16-core server, two 8-core processors or several VMs of at least 4 cores each
- No CALs needed: unlimited users and devices can connect
- Standard uses up to 24 cores and 128 GB of buffer pool memory per instance
- Digital delivery: nothing is shipped
What does a 16-core SQL Server 2022 Standard licence cover?
It covers 16 cores of SQL Server 2022 Standard under the Per Core model. That is enough for a physical server with one 16-core processor or two 8-core processors, with unlimited users and devices.
| Setup | Core licences needed | This 16-core licence |
|---|---|---|
| Physical server, 1 processor with 16 cores | 16 | Covered |
| Physical server, 2 processors with 8 cores each | 16 | Covered |
| 4 virtual machines with 4 virtual cores each | 16 | Covered |
| Physical server, 1 processor with 24 cores | 24 | Add 8 more core licences |
You can also license virtual machines individually with these cores, as long as each VM gets at least 4 core licences. Standard uses at most 24 cores per instance, so a 16-core licence sits comfortably within its limits.
Should I choose SQL Server 2022 Standard or Enterprise?
Choose Standard for most business applications, and Enterprise only for very large or mission-critical databases. SQL Server 2022 Standard supports up to 24 cores and 128 GB of buffer pool memory per instance, which covers most small and mid-size workloads. Enterprise adds unlimited scale, full availability groups and online index maintenance.
| Standard | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing models | Per Core, or Server + CAL | Per Core (new purchases) |
| Max compute per instance | Lesser of 4 sockets or 24 cores | Operating system maximum |
| Max buffer pool memory per instance | 128 GB | Operating system maximum |
| Always On availability groups | Basic only (2 replicas, 1 database) | Full, up to 8 secondary replicas |
| Failover cluster instance nodes | 2 | Up to 16 |
| Online index create and rebuild | No | Yes |
| Transparent data encryption (TDE) | Yes | Yes |
| Resource Governor | No | Yes |
A common mistake we see is paying for Enterprise "just in case". If you later need it, SQL Server Setup can upgrade a Standard instance to Enterprise in place. See Microsoft's SQL Server 2022 editions and features for the full list.
What's new in SQL Server 2022?
SQL Server 2022 added ledger tables for tamper-evident data, the link to Azure SQL Managed Instance for disaster recovery and migration, and contained availability groups. Query Store is switched on by default for new databases.
Parameter Sensitive Plan optimization helps queries whose best plan depends on the values passed in. SQL Server 2022 can also back up to S3-compatible object storage, and it supports TDS 8.0 with mandatory encryption and TLS 1.3.
What are the system requirements for SQL Server 2022?
SQL Server 2022 needs a 64-bit (x64) processor of at least 1.4 GHz, 1 GB of RAM and 6 GB of free disk space. These are bare minimums: Microsoft recommends at least 4 GB of RAM, and production databases usually need far more. Standard also installs on Windows 10 and 11, which is handy for small offices and test machines.
| Component | Minimum requirement |
|---|---|
| Processor | x64, 1.4 GHz minimum; 2.0 GHz or faster recommended |
| Memory (RAM) | 1 GB minimum; 4 GB or more recommended |
| Disk space | 6 GB of free space minimum |
| Operating system | Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 or 2025; Windows 10 (version 1607 or later) or Windows 11 for Standard |
| .NET Framework | 4.7.2 |

How do I install and activate SQL Server 2022 Standard?
Download SQL Server 2022 from the link in your order email and enter the product key during Setup. The key decides which edition is installed. SQL Server has no separate online activation like Windows, so once Setup finishes with your key, the Standard edition is ready to use.
- Run
setup.exeas an administrator and open Installation → New SQL Server stand-alone installation. - On the Product Key page, choose to enter a product key and type the key from your order email.
- Accept the licence terms and select the features you need. Most servers only need Database Engine Services.
- Choose a default or named instance, set the service accounts and authentication mode, and finish the wizard.
- Already running Evaluation or Express? Open Maintenance → Edition Upgrade in the Installation Center and enter your key instead of reinstalling.
A common mistake we see is clicking through the Product Key page with the free Evaluation edition selected. Evaluation stops working after 180 days. If that has happened, run Edition Upgrade with your key; your databases stay where they are.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need CALs with a per-core SQL Server licence?
No. Under the Per Core model, unlimited users and devices can access SQL Server without client access licences. CALs are only needed when a server is licensed under the Server + CAL model, which is available for Standard edition only.
Do I license physical cores or threads?
Physical cores. On a physical server, hyper-threading doesn't change the count: a processor with 8 cores and 16 threads needs 8 core licences. On a virtual machine licensed on its own, you count the virtual cores assigned to it, with a minimum of 4.
Is SQL Server 2022 still supported?
Yes. SQL Server 2022 is in mainstream support until January 2028, so it still gets fixes and improvements. Extended support with security updates then continues until January 2033, under Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy.
Is there a free SQL Server edition for development or testing?
Yes. SQL Server 2022 Developer edition has the full Enterprise feature set but may only be used for development and testing, not production. SQL Server Express is free for small production databases, with tight limits on database size and memory.
