What can you do with Access 2019?

Access lets you build a database without being a programmer. You create tables for your data, link them with relationships, and add forms for entering records, queries for finding them and reports for printing them.

It's a good fit for data that has outgrown a spreadsheet: customer lists, stock control, asset registers or project tracking. Access can also connect to SQL Server and other data sources when you need more capacity.

New in Access 2019: 11 new chart types for visualising data, and the Large Number (bigint) data type for better compatibility with SQL databases.

Should I buy Access on its own or a full Office suite?

Buy Access 2019 on its own if Access is the only Office app you need. If you also need several other Office apps, an Office 2019 suite usually makes more sense than separate keys.

A standalone app is the full desktop version, not a cut-down one. Access 2019 on its own has the same features as Access inside an Office 2019 suite.

What are the system requirements for Access 2019?

Access 2019 needs a Windows 11 PC with a 1.1 GHz dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and 4 GB of free disk space. Microsoft lists the same minimums for the whole Office 2019 family, including standalone apps. There's no Mac version of Access.

Microsoft's current requirements list Windows 11, as Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Full details are on Microsoft's Office system requirements page.

Is Access 2019 still supported?

No. Microsoft ended support for Access 2019 on 14 October 2025, together with the rest of Office 2019. The app still installs, activates and works, but it no longer receives security updates.

It can still make sense for offline PCs or to match an existing setup. For a supported version, we suggest Access 2024, which Microsoft supports until 9 October 2029.

How do I install and activate Access 2019?

Redeem the key to your Microsoft account first, then install Access from that account. The instructions in your order email walk you through it; in most cases the steps are:

  1. Go to microsoft365.com/setup and sign in with your personal Microsoft account (or create one).
  2. Enter the 25-character key from your email to add Access 2019 to that account.
  3. Open account.microsoft.com/services (“Services & subscriptions”) and select Install.
  4. Run the installer, open Access and sign in with the same account if asked.
  5. Check File → Account: it should show “Product Activated”.

A common problem we see is a clash with Office that's already on the PC. Microsoft doesn't support two Click-to-Run installations that contain the same app, so Access 2019 can't sit next to Microsoft 365 or another Office version that already includes Access. An older MSI-based install such as Office 2016 can also block setup, so remove it first.

What does a Retail key linked to a Microsoft account mean?

It means the licence is stored in your Microsoft account, not just on one PC. Redeeming the key is a one-time step; after that you install by signing in, as Microsoft explains in its guide to redeeming a product key.

That makes reinstalling simple after a Windows reset or when you replace your computer: sign in to Services & subscriptions and select Install again. The licence covers one PC at a time, so uninstall Access from the old computer first.

Use one personal Microsoft account and keep its sign-in details safe. If you redeem the key with a throwaway address or a work account, the licence can be hard to find later.

Frequently asked questions

Does Access 2019 work on a Mac?

No. Access is only available for Windows, and Microsoft doesn't make a Mac version. Mac users who need Access usually run it in a Windows virtual machine with its own Windows licence, or share data through Excel instead.

Can I still use Access 2019 now that support has ended?

Yes. The app installs, activates and works as before. Since 14 October 2025, though, Microsoft no longer releases security updates for it, so it's best for offline or low-risk use. For a supported version, choose Access 2024, which gets updates until 9 October 2029.

Can I reinstall Access 2019 or move it to a new PC?

Yes. Because the Retail licence sits in your Microsoft account, you can sign in at account.microsoft.com/services and install it again after a reset or on a new PC. Uninstall it from the old computer first, because the licence covers one PC at a time.

Do I need Office installed to use Access 2019?

No. Access 2019 is a complete standalone app and installs on its own, without any other Office app. If the PC already has a different Office version that includes Access, remove it first, as explained in the installation section above.
